RIP Heavy D

It’s a sad day in the world of hip hop, as we’ve learned that the “Overweight Lover” himself, Heavy D, has passed away at just 44-years-old.

Rap legend Heavy D – one of the most influential rappers of the ’90s — died earlier today.

Heavy D — real name Dwight Arrington Myers – was rushed to an L.A. hospital around noon today … and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 1 PM. He was 44 years old.

We’ve learned a 911 call was placed from Heavy’s Beverly Hills home around 11:25 AM to report an unconscious male on the walkway .

When help arrived, we’re told Heavy D was conscious and speaking — and was transported to a nearby hospital.

He died a short time later.

Cops are investigating the death — and so far, there are no obvious signs of foul play. [SOURCE]

No official statements have been released, but rumors have been circulating that the cause of death was most likely a heart attack. His passing definitely comes as a shock, considering he just recently returned to the stage, performing live for the first time in 15 years at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards. You can check out that performance below. -RIP-

Steve Jobs Dies At 56

Steve Jobs 1955-2011

Apple co-founder and technological visionary, Steve Jobs, has passed away at the age of 56. Apple has issued the following statement on their website:

Apple has lost a visionary and a creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

If you would like to share your thoughts, memories, and condolences, please email rememberingsteve@apple.com

It’s truly amazing how much of an impact one person can have on our day-to-day lives. My Twitter and Facebook feeds have been filled with updates about Steve’s passing; and they have come from people of all ages, genders, races and backgrounds. His genius will truly be missed. RIP.

RIP Tupac

Today marks the 15th anniversary of Tupac Shakur’s untimely death. In my opinion, he was by far the GREATEST rapper to ever do it. No one can even come close to being on that same level, and he was just 25-years-old when he passed away. It’s crazy to think how different the game might be today if Pac was still around.

Check out one of my favorite Tupac joints below.

In Case You Missed It: BET’s “Aaliyah: One In A Million” Tribute

In case you missed it, this past Thursday (August 25), BET payed tribute to fallen R&B singer Aaliyah on the 10h anniversary of her death. The one-hour “One In A Million” special included her music videos, vintage interviews, never-before-scene footage and of course the thoughts and stories from those closest to the singer (including numerous family members and celebrities such as Missy Elliott, Damon Dash and Timbaland).

Shout out to BET for doing this tribute “right.” If you can watch it in its entirety with dry-eyes, you’re a lot stronger than me.

Throwback Thursday – Aaliyah “The One I Gave My Heart To” (RIP)

It’s hard to believe that today marks the 10-year anniversary of R&B singer Aaliyah’s untimely, tragic death. After filming the video for her single “Rock The Boat” in the Bahamas, Aaliyah and 8 others were killed in a plane crash as they were returning to the States.

The definition of a true triple-threat, she could sing, dance and act her ass off. She had just released her third album and was set to star in The Matrix Reloaded when she was taken away from us way too early. Her impact is still deeply felt within the music industry, and it’s crazy to imagine what she would have accomplished if she was still here today.

RIP “Baby Girl”

VIBE Pays Tribute To Amy Winehouse

Kelly Rowland donned the original cover of VIBE‘s 16th annual “Juice Issue,” but the magazine has now released a second cover honoring the passing of Amy Winehouse. The issue will include thoughts from Amy’s close friend and producer Salaam Remi; you can check out a snippet of that below.

I’m in London now. I’m out here because [Amy and I] were supposed to go to a wedding today. And before I could get to her yesterday she passed. We were going to the wedding of Nick Symansky, who is the person who really found her. He found her when he was a scout at 19. And he was the manager before they got the Universal deal.

They went ahead with the wedding. All I could do was sit there and imagine how many jokes she would have been cracking with me. We were in the middle of working on the album. She finished writing the record. We just hadn’t recorded.

For the last couple of weeks we were video chatting regularly. I was just talking to Nas. Both her and Nas were born on September 14, so we were going to Barbados with all of them for her birthday. She really doesn’t look forward to her birthday, you know what I’m saying?

Read the rest of Salaam’s recollection of his last days with Amy when the issue hits stands August 16.

Breaking News: Amy Winehouse Found Dead

Reports have surfaced that British singer, Amy Winehouse has been found dead at her London apartment. While no cause of death has been proclaimed, it’s well known that Amy has struggled with substance abuse for years.

Via TMZ:

A press release from the Metropolitan Police, which doesn’t specifically name Winehouse, says:

Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased.

On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.

Last month, Winehouse canceled her European tour after a performance in Serbia where she seemed completely out of it.

Regardless of the circumstances, it’s always sad to see someone pass away at such an incredibly young age, especially someone with so much talent.

You can check out one of my favorite tracks from the singer after the jump. RIP Amy.
